Overview

The RTC-Web effort (Real Time Collaboration on the World Wide Web) is an effort to achieve a standardized infrastructure in Web browsers on which real-time interactive communication between users of the World Wide Web can be achieved.

Formally, there are two efforts in standards bodies:
  • An IETF activity to define the formats and protocols used to communicate between browsers
  • A W3C activity to define the APIs that a Web application can use to control this communication.
The activity was kicked off by a workshop in October 2010. As of January 2011, activities in the W3C and the IETF have been proposed, but nothing has yet been formally approved.
The IETF WG proposed charter is discussed on the Dispatch WG list - dispatch@ietf.org.
